Hobart 1000 – A Fan Favourite

First staged in 1935 as the Hobart Cup and rebranded in 1939 when total prizemoney reached £1,000 (then a national record), the Hobart 1000 proudly holds the title of Australia’s oldest greyhound classic.

For nine decades, it has been the jewel of Tasmania’s summer chasing carnival, drawing interstate stars and passionate crowds. Now a Group 1 sprint over 461 metres, with $100,000 in prizemoney, the event continues to stand as Tasmania’s flagship night of racing.

The 2025 Hobart 1000, held on Thursday 11 December as a twilight meeting, presented an opportunity to honour that legacy and celebrate the sport at its best.

In marking this 90-year milestone, the event embraced its heritage and tradition and was transformed into a community celebration with special messages from footy stars, winning jockeys and parliamentary representatives.

The event also celebrated all those who have shaped the Hobart 1000 across generations, recognising its place in Tasmanian sporting history and the greyhound racing community.
