Greyhounds making a difference for WA Police
When your job is often intense and unpredictable, switching off is not easy. However, Armadale Police Officer Marlon Pritchard has found his life balance in the form of a greyhound named Mr Valentine.

“I’m a tactical intelligence officer on the rapid high-harm offender response team – it’s a high-pressure environment,” Marlon told Racing WA. “Having Mr Valentine when I get home has had such a positive impact on my wellbeing.
“He’s affectionate, calm and has been so valuable for our mental health.”
A partnership between the WA Police Union (WAPU) and Racing WA’s Greyhounds as Pets WA (GAP WA) program has led to more police officers adopting and fostering greyhounds. There are currently 18 GAP dogs in police families across the State, including three in regional areas, and there are three families who have adopted a second greyhound.
The paternship offers rebates and incentives to encourage police officers and their families to consider adopting or fostering greyhounds, helping to provide a loving home for retired racers, while also giving officers a trusted source of support at home.
Marlon and his partner discovered GAP through social media and praised the process that landed them with their beloved new four-legged family member.
“We actually had another dog in mind, but GAP’s matchmaking process was excellent,” he said. “They suggested Mr Valentine and when we met him, it was clear he was the right fit.
“He’s so easy-going – happy with just one or two short walks a day and the rest of the time he just hangs out at home. “Even if I’m busy on overtime, he’s flexible and content. I wasn’t expecting how easy they are.”

GAP WA Program Manager Lexie Ekert said the partnership was a great initiative. “The partnership with the WA Police Union has been incredible, both for the ‘hounds and officers,” she said.
“The calm nature of greyhounds and their low maintenance make them a perfect fit for officers who work long or unpredictable hours.
“We’ve had wonderful feedback about the positive impact greyhounds have had on officers’ mental wellbeing, especially factoring in the often-intense nature of their jobs.” With more WA Police families joining the program, the flourishing partnership between Racing WA and WAPU continues to show the unique role greyhounds can play in people’s lives.
For many, they are more than just pets, but also vital sources of comfort and stability – particularly for those who have some of the toughest jobs in the community.
Marlon encouraged more of his colleagues to consider a greyhound and take advantage of the partnership on offer.
“I’d 100 per cent recommend them to others in the force,” he said. “They fit into your lifestyle so well. They’re independent, loving and great companions... they really are the perfect family pet.”
