Greyhounds and firefighters team up to champion animal welfare

Some of WA’s most affectionate four-legged friends have put their paws in to help promote pet safety as Racing WA’s Greyhounds as Pets WA (GAP) program joined forces with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) ahead of Pet Fire Safety Day.

The initiative brought together retired racing greyhounds and firefighters from Armadale Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service for a special "Pat + Chat" session. It provided an opportunity to share important pet safety advice, while also showcasing the ideal temperament and suitability of greyhounds as household pets.

The event formed part of GAP’s ongoing work to support retired racing greyhounds as they transition into loving homes across Western Australia, in addition to highlighting the importance of keeping pets safe during emergencies.

Racing WA Head of Animal Welfare Caroline Mcmullen said the event was a valuable way to connect with the community, while promoting adoption and animal welfare outcomes.

"Our greyhounds thrive as family pets, and initiatives such as this give people the opportunity to see firsthand how calm, affectionate and adaptable they can be,” she said.

"At the same time, we're encouraging pet owners to think about their animals when preparing for emergencies and ensure they have plans in place to keep every member of the family safe.

“Community events like this help showcase the positive outcomes being delivered by GAP every day."

Racing WA's Chief Racing Officer David Hunter said the event reflected the organisation's commitment to lifelong welfare for all greyhounds.

"The welfare of our animals remains a priority throughout every stage of their lives, including after their racing careers have finished," Mr Hunter said.

"Through our Greyhounds as Pets WA program, retired greyhounds are supported into new homes where they can enjoy life as much-loved companions.”

With thousands of retired racing greyhounds successfully rehomed across Western Australia, GAP continues to create opportunities for the public to meet the breed, learn about adoption and the available support and challenge common misconceptions.

For those considering adoption, greyhounds are known for their gentle nature, adaptability and ability to fit seamlessly into a range of households.
